SÃO PAULO - The preliminary results of the 2006 Agricultural Census showed that Brazil´s cropland grew by 83.5% compared to 1996, the Brazilian Census Bureau (IBGE) informed on Friday. In the same comparison, pasture area shrank by 3%.

According to IBGE, over 1996 to 2006 Brazil´s pasture has been gradually replaced by cropland due to the country´s progressive insertion in the global grain market (namely soybean) and to an increase in cattle-raising.

The census has also shown a 7.1% increase in farms, an 8.5% reduction in the sector´s employment and increases in livestock numbers: beef (11%), pork (14.9%) and poultry (73.2%).

The census´ definitive results will be released in October 2008. © 2007 NoticiasFinancieras - InvestNews - All rights reserved
